About Me

Let me make it simple for you and give you my introduction. I am the White Shark. I am also known as “Great White Shark”, “White Pointer” or you can call me simply “Great White”

My Home

We are the only surviving member of Charcarodon genus and the family of Lamnidae. Carcharodon means jagged tooth (from Greek karcharos meaning sharp and odous meaning teeth). Our species name carcharias is also translated from Greek and means point and it got us the name of White Pointer.

Our delicious food

We usually patrol small coastal archipelagos with offshore reefs, banks, shoals and rocky headlands. Such areas are inhabited by seals, sea lions and walruses and we feed on them when we are hungry! We usually cruise in a purposeful manner, either near the bottom or the surface of the seas, and spend relatively little time at midway depths.

As infants, we feed on fishes and other sharks, and as we reach adulthood, we feed on turtles, seals, sea lions, small whales, porpoise, dolphins and seabirds.

Hungry time

We hunt our prey by ambush. We just surprise our prey by suddenly rushing it and inflict a sudden and massive bite that leads to its fatality.

We will retire and wait for the prey to quickly die, giving rise to the terms bite and spit or bite and wait for this method of attack.

We the great whites are opportunistic scavengers who can feed on the carcasses of whales and basking sharks. We are “macro predators”.

We grow

Great White Shark males grow 3.5 to 4 meters and weigh 520 to 780 Kilograms. Our girls grow 4.5 to 5 meters long and weigh on an average 680 to 1,100 Kilograms.

Wish me!!

Males mature at about 26 years and females usually conceive from about 33 years. I can swim at 60 km/hr and dive over a kilometer deep. My average life span is over 70 years – the same as of human beings

We live in oceans

We live in oceans that are neither too cold nor too hot and spend most of the time in low depth areas of coastal waters. Our range extends from the surf line to open ocean and from the surface to depths over 1,300 m(4,265 ft).

Smell and Bite

Hey… you have 32 teeth, right? I have about 300 serrated teeth in several rows. My bite is 20 times stronger that yours! I can smell presence of prey from over a mile away and even a drop of blood in 100 litres of water!

Work together

We are a sociable lot and will sometimes work together to increase our chances of catching prey. We are actually pretty shy and not very aggressive, after food we would like to just swim around.

We are also quite afraid of humans! Because of poaching and killing us for our meat.

Who we are?

We, in some form or another, have been around for over 400 million years, making an incredible evolutionary achievement. Do you know that our forefathers roamed earth’s water along with dinosaurs!! pretty cool, right!!

While most sharks are cold blooded, (he he he!!) meaning they are unable to control their body temperatures, but us, the Great White Sharks are warm blooded. This means that we are able to raise and lower our body temperature, allowing us to live in colder waters.

Please Save Us

We are caught globally, mostly as by-catch in inshore fisheries using different equipment for our skin, fin, flesh and teeth. Shark fin soup is a very famous delicacy, make us more vulnerable to be hunted for our pretty fin In the beach protection programs in Australia and South Africa, we are targeted, however, sometimes, these programs release live sharks.
